When Masculinity Becomes Toxic

Statistics on Physical Health Effects:

In regards to physical health, men face poorer odds than women do, and it’s getting worse.

  • Life expectancy is 7 years shorter for men than for women.
  • Men have a higher death rate than women for all 15 leading causes of death.
    • including 2x higher rate for heart disease and 1.5x higher rate for cancer
  • Men have higher rates of 7 of the 10 most common infectious diseases.
  • While women’s rates of dying from cancer have not changed in the past 35 years, men’s rates have increased over 20%.

Although health can be affected by ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc., accounting for all those factors still makes it clear that gender plays a role in physical health.
